Sept. 2, 2016, Glennette Field, PJMSThe Port Jervis Football team came up big on Friday night against the Goshen Gladiators with a 28-14 victory at home. Henry Bowers was the hero of the night with 122 rushing yards and three of Ports four touchdowns of the night. The first of Bower’s trio of touchdowns was a one yard run in the first half that at the time gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead. Port looked to regain the lead, coming out of the half strong and pushed all the way up to midfield, before faltering and coming up just short of the first down on third down. On fourth and inches it was Bowers who took off flying from the snap taking the ball all the way into the touchdown from Port’s own 49. The Raiders went for the two point conversion and as Jake Stanzl tried to power his way into the end zone he fumbled the ball. Fortunately for PJ Branden Roesch recovered the fumble for the two points. The Raiders had a 14-7 lead, a lead they would build on to win.

After a dramatic fumble from Goshen that the Raiders recovered it was Shameik Washington who came up big on fourth and inches. The junior running back powered his way to a 46 yard TD to elaborate to the Raiders lead making in 20-7. Carson Sauschuck was then blocked on the point after, but the Raiders were well ahead ending the third quarter.

With less than ten minutes to play it was Henry Bowers again, this time from Goshen’s 45 yard line in for the touchdown. Erik Raefski caught the two point conversion and Port went up 28-7. Goshen would tack on another touchdown with a 1:03 to go in the fourth quarter, but was too far out of range to catch Port.

The Raiders had overall an excellent night with 238 yards rushing. Bowers paced the team with 122 yards on the ground. He was followed by Shameik Washington, Michael Piscitelli, Jake Stanzl, Rabelle Sheppard, Jared DeMarco, Brandon Roesch, and Abner Padin.

The Raiders had 129 yards passing, led by senior QB Jake Stanzl. He was 8 of 13 for 133 yards passing, connecting with Rabelle Sheppard, Erik Raefski, Shameik Washington, Jason Butler, Nick James and Asher Pelton.

The Raider’s defense was superb with just one penalty all night and not allowing Goshen to score more than once every two quarters. Port Jervis is away in Middletown for the immensely popular and historic Bell Game that is one of our nation’s biggest ongoing rivalries.
